Gilchrist Music Education Center is Now Open

The Space Provides a New Home for Music Education in Sioux City

Music has the power to inspire, teach and bring people together. On June 16, that mission took center stage as the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra (SCSO) officially celebrated the opening of the Gilchrist Music Education Center with a ribbon cutting at the historic Orpheum Theatre. The Gilchrist Foundation awarded the SCSO a total of $475,000 for the Music Education Center.

The ribbon cutting event celebrated years of vision, collaboration and community investment in the future of music education across Siouxland. The ribbon cutting brought together students, families, community leaders and supporters to celebrate the milestone. The event also welcomed the SCSO’s new executive director, Sam Pavel, and his wife, Kayla, as they begin a new chapter with the organization and the Sioux City community.

The SCSO shared online that the Gilchrist Music Education Center didn’t begin with a single brick. It began with a vision. That vision became reality thanks to the support of community partners, including the Gilchrist Foundation and the Iowa Economic Development Authority, whose investments helped bring the project to life.

A Place for Sioux City’s Young Musicians

Located within the historic Orpheum Theatre, the 2,800-square-foot center serves as the permanent home for the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra’s educational outreach and youth programs. It features a music library, modern rehearsal and recording facilities and climate-controlled storage that protects the Symphony’s valuable instruments and extensive music collection, including pieces that are more than a century old.

Most importantly, the center creates a dedicated place where young musicians can learn, practice and grow. It gives students access to high-quality educational resources while expanding opportunities for schools and community partners to connect through music.

The SCSO described the new center as “more than a building.” It is a place where curiosity will be encouraged, creativity will be nurtured and the organization’s commitment to music education will continue to grow for generations.

Those goals closely reflect the Gilchrist Foundation’s belief that investing in young people strengthens communities. Whether supporting education, the arts or opportunities that help individuals reach their full potential, the Foundation is proud to partner with organizations that create lasting impact.

The Gilchrist Music Education Center is one more example of what can happen when a community comes together around a shared vision. As the first students fill its rehearsal rooms, discover new instruments and build confidence through music, the center will continue to enrich Siouxland for years to come.

About The Gilchrist Foundation

The Gilchrist Foundation was established by Jocelyn Gilchrist of Sioux City to honor her family and their philanthropic interests. Jocelyn supported the arts, wildlife and conservation, public broadcasting and disaster relief throughout her lifetime both personally and through the Foundation. After her death in 2008, the Foundation continued to support these causes.

Today, the mission of the Gilchrist Foundation is to further the philanthropy of its founder and her family with an emphasis on fostering the long-term viability of charitable organizations and enabling special projects rather than supplying current operating funds.
